In a daring rescue operation, a skier hailing from San Francisco was saved last weekend after becoming disoriented near a popular resort in the Lake Tahoe area and enduring a night stranded in the untamed wilderness, according to officials.

The skier, identified as Mihayl Petkov, 34, was traversing the slopes at Kirkwood Ski Resort on Saturday when he ventured out of bounds on the back side of the mountain, as revealed by the Amador County Sheriff’s Office.

As Petkov attempted to navigate his way to safety, he stumbled upon deep powder snow that impeded his progress, rendering it impossible to reattach his skis, relayed the sheriff’s office.

Undeterred by adversity, Petkov pressed on through the treacherous terrain, trudging through several feet of snow until darkness enveloped the surroundings. Eventually, he managed to reach out to his friends for assistance, as disclosed by the sheriff’s office.

Promptly responding to the distress call, search and rescue personnel raced to the scene, situated in a remote locale east of Silver Lake. However, the hazardous nocturnal conditions thwarted their efforts to reach Petkov. Even a California Highway Patrol helicopter was dispatched to the area, successfully locating Petkov but unable to extract him from the perilous situation.

With the break of dawn, a renewed rescue endeavor was launched both on the ground and in the air. The helicopter crew managed to identify a secure landing spot, enabling them to swiftly airlift Petkov and transport him back to Kirkwood, recounted the sheriff’s office.

Seizing the opportunity, the sheriff’s office conveyed an important safety message to skiers and snowboarders alike, emphasizing the significance of adhering to resort boundaries. Furthermore, they advised against engaging in backcountry activities alone, advocating for adequate preparedness to counteract unforeseen challenges. In dire circumstances, it was underscored that immediate assistance from rescuers might not be feasible.
