Long Island man menaced roommate with fire extinguisher, stabbed cops with ‘Rambo-style’ knife

A Long Island man shot dead by police after stabbing two cops had threatened his roommate with a fire extinguisher — and then turned a “Rambo-style” knife on the responding officers, seriously wounding them, authorities said Thursday.

The bloody confrontation erupted at around 5 p.m. Wednesday inside an apartment at the sprawling Blue Ridge condominium building on Birchwood Street in Medford.

Suffolk County police officers responded to a 911 call about a 56-year-old man who was acting violently towards his roommate and menacing him with a fire extinguisher.

The call was made by a caseworker who was checking up on the two men.

As a pair of Sixth Precinct cops approached the unhinged suspect, he pulled out what was described as a “Rambo-style” butcher knife and stabbed both officers, reported Newsday.

At least one and possibly both cops opened fire on the knife-wielding man, striking him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

One of the injured cops was flown by a police helicopter to Stoney Brook University Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition after suffering a stab wound to the clavicle, said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison.

A second officer sustained multiple wounds to the chest and was transported to the same hospital via ambulance in stable condition.

A third officer suffered minor injuries, for which he was treated at the hospital and released home Wednesday night.

Harrison said the suspect, who has not been publicly identified as of Thursday afternoon, had a criminal history and possibly suffered from mental health issues.

Residents at the condo complex where the deadly incident unfolded have been complaining about a spate of tire slashings and broken windows in recent months.

Maria Daume, who lives in the building with her toddler, told Newsday she was not surprised when she learned of the violent incident.

“It was bound to happen,” she said.
