Lockdown lifted at Laurel Wood Elementary School after police received reports of suspicious person

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) — Concerned parents breathed a sigh of relief after Salinas police searched the Laurel Wood Elementary School campus looking for a suspicious person but found nothing.

Police initially received reports of this suspicious person just after 8 a.m. and that he might be in possession of a weapon.

According to police, the report said the man was walking in a nearby park.

Due to this park being close to Laurel Wood Elementary School, a lockdown was initiated and about 13 officers arrived on the scene.

The police used a drone to aerially search the campus and adjacent streets, and officers went around the campus and surrounding areas to look for any trace of the person who was reported.

They were unable to find anything, police said, leading to the safe reopening of the school.

The district says additional counseling will be available to students and wants to reassure everyone that the campus is safe to return to.
