July 7, 2023

Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Captain Michelle Pilch, Chief Law Enforcement Officer of the Piscataway Police Department, held a press conference today to announce the arrest of a Hightstown man in connection with a heinous crime. The suspect has been charged with a variety of offenses, including sexual assault, attempted murder, and burglary.

The incident took place on Thursday afternoon, July 6, 2023, when authorities responded to a 911 call reporting an assault at a residence in Piscataway. Upon arrival, the victim, an adult female, was found injured and was immediately transported to the hospital for treatment. The initial investigation conducted by the Piscataway Police Department suggested that the victim had been sexually assaulted.

Subsequent investigations led by Detective Sean Morelli of the Piscataway Police Department and Detective Daniela Castro of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victim’s Unit revealed that the assailant responsible for the assault was Justin Surofsky, a 26-year-old man from Hightstown. Surofsky was swiftly apprehended on the same day of the incident in East Windsor without resistance.

As a result of their comprehensive investigation, law enforcement officials have charged Surofsky with an array of serious offenses. These charges include two counts of first-degree Aggravated Sexual Assault, first-degree Criminal Attempt-Murder, second-degree Burglary, third-degree Aggravated Criminal Sexual Contact, second-degree Kidnapping, third-degree Criminal Restraint, second-degree Aggravated Assault, and first-degree Robbery. Surofsky is currently being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center while awaiting a pre-trial detention hearing at the Superior Court.

The investigation into the case is still ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information or surveillance footage that may assist the investigation to come forward. Detective Morelli of the Piscataway Police Department can be reached at (732) 562-2355, while Detective Castro of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office can be contacted at (732) 745-3652.

It is important to note that, at this stage, the charges brought against Surofsky are only allegations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The severity of these charges and the nature of the crime have raised concerns in the local community, and law enforcement agencies are working diligently to ensure justice is served. The arrest of Surofsky serves as a reminder of the commitment of law enforcement officials to protect and safeguard the residents of Middlesex County from such acts of violence and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
