Live updates: NYC protests, video released by police Tire Nichols sparks national outrage

It was January 7, 2023. Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old father and FedEx employee, was returning home from a park where he had gone to photograph the sunset. Memphis police stopped him for alleged reckless driving. Nichols died three days later. He was black, as were the five discharged officers charged with second-degree murder and other crimes.

Body camera graphic footage of Nichols being beaten was released on Friday, almost three weeks before the day of the incident. And despite the almost universal and multi-day warning, its content was shocking, America was stunned.

(Excerpts from footage of Nichols’ arrest can be seen in the video above, which has been edited for time and profanity. Click here to view the full video released by the police – Warning: This shows scenes of violence that may be disturbing.)

Protests erupted across the United States on Friday night as officials at all levels of government reaffirmed the people’s right to do so, urging people to heed Mother Nichols’ call for a peaceful demonstration. Hundreds of people marched in New York that first night, and there were few arrests. More protests are expected over the weekend.
