Lipan could become the first team from Texas in 16 years to win the girls’ and boys’ basketball state titles in the same season.

LIPAN, TX (CBSNewsTexas.com) — It is not common for a school to win the 2A Girls State Basketball Tournament.

But it’s even less likely that a boys’ team at the same school during the same season will be two wins away from the same.

This is the case at Lipan High School, which is just an hour southwest of Fort Worth.

“The fact that they finally saw their hard work pay off was phenomenal,” said Amber Branson, the girls head coach.

She and boys head coach Brent Gaylor say Lipan is a special place. This is their home, and their community is their family.

Family is the key word. Branson’s starting point guard is her daughter Taylor. Another key player on her team? Gaylor’s daughter, Hannah.

And now that his daughter is state champion, it’s his turn to take the boys to San Antonio this weekend.

“I told her. I told you for six or seven years that I hope that one day you will put me in a very awkward position, and here we are … That night between father and daughter, everything became quite emotional. “Gaylor said.

Emotional and even more incredible when you consider that Coach Branson also has a son, Tate, who plays for the boys’ team.

“Our kids are very competitive, whether they play basketball or cards… they want to play as well as we do,” Branson said.

It’s been 16 years since a Texas high school won the UIL girls’ and boys’ basketball title in the same season.

“We have a very small city,” Branson said. “[We have] a lot of support and I think that means a lot to all of us.”
