Lee County Commissioners are expected to vote on the Cape Coral Bridge project.

CAPE CORAL, Florida. Lee County Commissioners may decide the future of the Cape Coral Bridge on Tuesday.

Commissioners say 20,000 drivers use the bridge every day and the bridge needs to be upgraded to improve access and extend the life of the bridge.

There are two plans for discussion:

  • The first option is to replace the bridge’s westbound lanes and expand the eastbound lanes by adding a third lane. This option will cost about $16 million.
  • The second option is to replace the bridge, the new design will extend its service life by another 40 years. This option, according to county commissioners, would cost about $20 million.

A two-lane westbound span was built in 1963 and is planned to be replaced. The two-lane eastbound span was built in 1989 and can be extended to accommodate three lanes and a multi-purpose track.

The board indicated at its last meeting that it is in favor of a completely new bridge and is expected to vote on Tuesday.
