Man arrested for manslaughter while intoxicated after crash in southeast Austin

The Austin Police Department (APD) has arrested a 33-year-old man following a fatal crash in southeast Austin.

Police said on January 1, around 8:55 p.m., officers responded to an accident between an SUV and a sedan driven by 33-year-old Benito Mondragon Mercado in the 3000 S block of US 183.

The passenger of the car with Mondragon Mercado was taken to the hospital, where the man died some time later.

Mondragon Mercado was arrested for manslaughter while intoxicated.

The incident is being investigated as the first fatal crash in Austin in 2023, resulting in one death in a year. As of the date of this accident in 2022, there were no fatal accidents.
