Kevin McCarthy promises to release all CCTV footage of the January 6th Capitol riot
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told reporters on Thursday that he intends to release all surveillance footage of the Jan. 6 capitol riot.
“I want to be very careful about it, but yes, I’m busy with it,” McCarthy told reporters when asked if he would release footage of the day.

I think the public should see what happened that day. I watched what Nancy Pelosi did where she politicized it. Where for the first time in history, as a speaker, they were not allowed to appoint a minority to the committee. We have watched the politicization of this. I think the American public should actually see what happened, not a politically motivated report.

Rep. Matt Goetz (R-FL), who led the charge against McCarthy during multiple speaker votes, said McCarthy promised to release footage of the Capitol on January 6 as one of his concessions to McCarthy’s opponents. Getz told Charlie Kirk on Tuesday:
Kevin McCarthy told us that he was going to provide evidence to the American people, which means releasing 14,000 hours of hidden tapes to the public. This, I think, will give a fuller context to that day, rather than selected moments that the January 6th committee tried to use to inflame and further divide our country.
Gatz also thanked McCarthy on Twitter after a video surfaced online of McCarthy’s comments about the release of the footage.

Republicans in the House of Representatives have long been demanding the release of the January 6 surveillance footage. A group of 23 Republican lawmakers led by former Rep. Louis Gomert (R-TX) wrote a letter to Capitol Police Department Chairman William J. Walker in August arguing that the release of the footage was “absolutely essential to good governance and establishing the truth.” .
However, a spokesman for the Capitol Police stated that the release of the footage would “ultimately be up to the Capitol Police Board”. Washington Times.
“The video is classified information and is therefore protected from public disclosure. Its release will ultimately be up to the Capitol Police Board, not the department,” a U.S. Capitol police spokesman said.
