Kansas School District: Gender Identity Can Be Hidden From Parents, Giving Up Preferred Pronouns Can Lead to Death

A school district in Kansas has released a gender support plan that appears to show a student’s gender identity can be hidden from parents, and teachers are told that not using preferred names and pronouns could result in the student’s death.

The Wichita Public Schools Gender Plan asks several questions to learn about the privacy of students’ gender identities and their access to certain facilities.

One of the questions in the plan is: “Do the guardians of this student know and support their child’s gender transition?Other questions concern how public or private a student’s gender identity will be and who will be their “favorite” adult at school. The form also asks for information about which bathroom and changing room the student will use.

The presentation for teachers, titled “LGBTQ+ Students: Pronouns and Beyond,” cites GLSEN, which has promoted LGBTQ+ education for elementary school students, to define a range of terms, including “gender identity,” “gender expression,” and “cisgender.” GLSEN has previously appeared to support children taking hormone replacement therapy for sex reassignment.

The presentation claims that schools are “hostile places” for LGBTQ+ students and that using a student’s preferred name instead of their birth name reduces the likelihood of them suffering from depression or having suicidal thoughts.

A presentation slide titled “LGBTQ Statistics (Influence Due to Lack of Support)” states that LGBTQ+ students whose parents do not support them are 8-10 times more likely to die by suicide than other students.

“Failure to use pronouns can lead to death,” read the notes to the presentation. “We are here to support and educate students, not to judge or push them to their limit.”

On another slide, teachers are encouraged to use student-preferred pronouns, even if it goes against what their parents would like.

“Not using preferred pronouns and/or names may amount to discrimination,” the slide says. “To allow parents not to use student-preferred pronouns and/or names is to allow themselves to be a proxy for discrimination. This is unacceptable”.

The nonprofit parent group Parents Defending Education, which received the documents at the request of the Freedom of Information Act, criticized the school district for undermining parents’ desires for how they would like to raise their children.

“Under the in loco parentis doctrine, schools are delegated a degree of authority over children during the school day,” PDE President Nicole Neilly said in a statement to FOX News Digital. “However, this does not mean, of course, that public school officials are replacing or supplanting the role of the family—something unfortunately too many taxpayer-funded educators seem to have forgotten. To undermine the right of parents to direct the upbringing of their children is not only immoral, but also illegal.”

Another presentation that was posted online by the county is titled “Transgender Awareness and Sensitivity for Leaders” and uses the “Gender Person” graphic to state that gender is on the spectrum. “Genderbread Person” features an image of a gingerbread man with a label on different body parts. The depiction implies that gender identity is in the mind, sexual orientation is in the heart, gender expression is how a person displays their gender, and biological sex is based on a person’s genitals.

The staff presentation also cautions against using the terms “biologically”, “genetically”, “born male or female”, “irregular pronouns”, and “bath bill”.

The presentation also outlines steps the district could take, including adding “Gender Identity and Expression” to a “corporate non-discrimination policy” and “supporting community organizations that promote transgender equality and respect.”

The district has another presentation posted online titled “Accommodation for Transgender Students and Staff”, which encourages staff to use the preferred name and gender pronoun of others.

Wichita Public Schools did not immediately respond to FOX News Digital’s request for comment.
