“It’s disgusting” | Three Comal ISD teachers arrested for inappropriate relations with students in less than a year

Two teachers used to work at Canyon Lake High School and the parents are upset.

CANYON LAKE, Texas. Three Comal ISD faculty were charged with inappropriate relations with students in less than a year. Two of them worked at Canyon Lake High School (CLHS).

In the latter case, the girls’ soccer coach surrendered. Orlando Neumann, 38, was arrested on Friday for inappropriate communication with a 15-year-old student. According to the Comal County Sheriff’s Office, Neumann also faces an unrelated charge of “possession with intent to promote child pornography.”

“I was speechless,” said one parent who did not want his name to be publicly named. “This school district is known to be a very good school district. So I think that made it even more amazing.”

Monday, KENS 5 talked to a dozen parents picking up their kids from school. Some said they were “disappointed” by the new accusations, others said they were “disgusted”.

“Teachers; they shouldn’t have that kind of contact with kids,” the CLHS student said.

In November, a CLHS math teacher was arrested. Devon Hopper, 38, is accused of sending inappropriate images and text messages to a 15-year-old student.

“There was always something like… you could tell she had a preference for boys,” the student said.

“It makes you so much more secure [of your kids]” said the parent.

Families say the school responded quickly to both incidents.

A spokesman for Comal ISD said the county conducts a full background and criminal background check on every hire.

“I know they are having more meetings about this,” the parent said. So I hope they come up with something.

The following letter was sent to CLHS families:

The purpose of this message is to inform you about a situation involving one of our teachers, Mr. Orlando Naumann. This morning, Mr. Naumann’s allegations of inappropriate communication with a student were brought to my attention. At this point, an immediate investigation began, involving the CLHS administration, human resources, and law enforcement. It was during our investigation that Mr. Nauman submitted his resignation. The Comal County Sheriff’s Office is investigating and will continue to investigate, which could lead to charges being filed.

Of course, the presence of two such incidents in one school year worries everyone. In response to the first incident in the fall, we held a meeting with all teachers and staff, including Mr. Nauman, to discuss the severity of this issue and reinforce the appropriate boundaries between students and teachers. We will continue to address this issue with all teachers and staff. And, as I said earlier, the District Human Resources Department is doing a full background and criminal background check on all new hires to make sure the teachers have the best interests of our students in mind. Please know that I am available to answer any questions you may have regarding this situation. In addition, if your child has any concerns or questions, our counselors are available to meet with them as needed. Also, if your child claims that something inappropriate has happened between him and Mr. Naumann, or any teacher or staff member here at CLHS, please let me know.

Sincerely, Mark Oberholzer, Principal of Canyon Lake High School.”

This came after another teacher in the area pleaded guilty to similar charges. Emily Anderson worked at Canyon High School in New Braunfels. A special education teacher was arrested in August for reportedly having sex with a 15-year-old student in a closet.
