Netflix’s latest film, True Spirit, follows the life of Australian teenager Jessica Watson, who at the age of 16 aspired to be the youngest person to sail solo, non-stop and unsupported around the world.

A new documentary that has just been released on streaming services chronicles the perilous journey she undertook to become the first person to sail 23,000 nautical miles around the world in eight months at the age of 16.

The incredible events described in True Spirit actually happened to Jessica Watson. Watson, then 16 years old, left Sydney, Australia on a 10m yacht on October 18, 2009 and returned on May 15, 2010, just three days before her 17th birthday.

Watson spent 210 days at sea, enduring storms, months of isolation and waves up to 12 meters high, while maintaining and repairing her ship and its components.

She may or may not be the youngest sailor to circumnavigate the globe, as there is debate about how many nautical miles she actually covered.

Watson is played by Titan’s Teegan Croft, whose parents are portrayed by True Blood’s Anna Paquin and House of Lies’ Josh Lawson.

Her sailing instructor Ben is played by Cliff Curtis (Avatar: The Way of the Water).

For Croft, “playing Raven on Titans meant adopting a ‘purple hair, very melancholic’ persona.”

And the creators of True Spirit had to make sure I wasn’t like that in real life so I could play Jess. The fact that I was able to crack a few jokes and make a few remarks convinced them that I could pass for a glib one. In other words, it’s more in my comfort zone.

I had never had the opportunity to perform in my native accent before, so it was a real pleasure. Yes, it was good that I got rid of it.

Croft also mentioned that she and Watson had dinner and sailing together before filming began.

Croft remarked, “It was all so strange and awkward at first. As if to say, “Hello, I’m playing a prank on you,” a strange feeling of remorse swept over me. But she handled it so gracefully that we get along well now.

Where is Jessica Watson now?

Following her experience in the ocean, Watson has worked with refugees in Lebanon and Syria as a youth advocate for the United Nations World Food Programme.

She subsequently enrolled at the Australian Institute of Management and received an MBA.

Watson currently works for Deloitte as a Human Capital Management Consultant.

She also speaks to audiences on issues such as risk management, resilience, and overcoming fear.
