Attorney General’s Office Investigating Fatal Police-Involved Shooting in Manchester, New Jersey

Trenton, December 6, 2023 – The Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation into a fatal police-involved shooting that took place on December 5, 2023, in Manchester, New Jersey. The incident resulted in the death of an adult male, whose identity is currently being withheld.

According to preliminary information, officers from the Manchester Township Police Department responded to a 9-1-1 call on Tuesday, December 5, at around 8:28 p.m. The call led them to Elizabeth Avenue, where they encountered the subject. Subsequently, at approximately 9:10 p.m., two officers discharged their service weapons, fatally injuring the subject. A firearm was later recovered at the scene.

The investigation falls under the purview of a 2019 law, P.L. 2019, c. 1, which mandates that the Attorney General’s Office conduct inquiries into deaths occurring during encounters with law enforcement officers or while the decedent is in custody. Furthermore, the law stipulates that all such investigations must be presented to a grand jury to determine if there is sufficient evidence to indict the officer or officers involved.

As of now, the investigation is ongoing, and no additional details are being released. The Attorney General’s Office will continue to diligently pursue this matter to ensure a thorough and transparent examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
