Insidious stories of ice week

Recent ice storms have surprised the UD community. The ice that made people slide and slide around the mall made for a fun and slightly intimidating escape from the standard routine.

Andrew Kelly, a freshman physics student from Boston, said, “It was a storm that Texas wasn’t built for.” He said that there are salt machines and such in Boston, but the Texans are not prepared for this kind of weather, which makes the experience all the more unnerving.

Emma Judge, a drama freshman, commented, “Being from Boston, I wondered why we canceled school. But then I saw ice. It was scary.”

“It’s like black ice,” said Joseph Fornier, a freshman majoring in English. In addition, Carmela Losando, an undergraduate English student, shared a story illustrating the overall experience of these three days. She said: “It was hard to stay in a routine, but the storm was a good setback to just hang out. But I’m glad it’s over. I was walking to the gym and fell down the stairs. Two girls saw me fall. I said I was fine, got up and fell down again!”

However, while the storm surprised the UD community, there was nothing untoward about it. Nora Yuli, an undeclared freshman, said: “This is the first time I have seen such a storm. It was time to catch up in academia and do other things. It was great fun to see everyone enjoying the snowy day. I saw people sledding on cardboard boxes, having fun. We need to be close to our friends.”

Kelly said that he and his friends sat in Haggar and spent time indoors together. “We did almost nothing,” he said. In fact, this seems to be the general opinion expressed by the community.

Gabrielle Estabrooks, junior teacher specialist, said: “It was a nice break from my studies. I really didn’t do anything.” Many people used this time to just be with friends and relax, as Yuli said.

Matthew Ong, Associate Economics and Policy Fellow, finds it interesting that UD didn’t have Zoom classes. “They just canceled classes!” He said.

In addition, this break was especially beneficial for some high school students, as Samantha Ronge, Senior Philosopher, said: “The storm came just in time because the Senior Philosophers were working on a big dissertation, so we had a few extra days. ”

The general consensus among the UD community is that this storm was more of a blessing than anything else. “The trees were beautiful, all covered in ice,” Ronge said. This storm was a nice break from the action, allowing for some cozy time indoors with friends and fun on the snow.
