Illinois woman finds dead husband in closet months after disappearance

A recent autopsy report from an Illinois coroner revealed how a woman found her dead husband in her home more than seven months after he disappeared.

On March 2, Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn released an autopsy report detailing the situation.

Troy resident Richard Madge committed suicide in April. Before he died, he called his wife Jennifer and said that he was coming home early from work.

Jennifer found that Richard’s car was parked outside their house, but couldn’t find him. She reported his disappearance a day later on 27 April.

The police conducted a thorough search of the Madges’ home, but were unable to find Richard.

According to FOX 2 St. Louis, Chief Deputy Coroner Kelly Rogers described the house as a “storekeeper’s house” and said it smelled like sewer.

When Jennifer called the police to report the smell, officials were never able to find the cause. The plumber suggested it was a sewer gas leak from pipes in the basement.

Jennifer eventually found her husband’s body on December 11th. She went to collect Christmas decorations in the closet and found his corpse.

By this point, his body had advanced beyond decomposition and was mummified.

Mummified bodies don’t always have a strong smell, Rogers said, which is why the search took so long.
