Hurts, Eagles soared to Super Bowl, thrashed 49ers for NFC title

The Eagles, who won the Super Bowl five years ago with a different coach and quarterback, will try again behind the formidable duo of Hurts and Sirianni.

PHILADELPHIA. Jalen Hurts had one of Philadelphia’s four rushing touchdowns and the Eagles soared into the Super Bowl, forcing both San Francisco quarterbacks out with injuries and beating the injured 49ers 31-7 in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game.

The Eagles, who won the Super Bowl five years ago with a different coach and quarterback, will try to do it again as part of the formidable duo of Hurts and coach Nick Sirianni. Philadelphia will play either the Cincinnati Bengals or former Eagles coach Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs.

Miles Sanders ran for two touchdowns, and linebacker Haason Redick landed a shot that knocked 49ers rookie quarterback Brock Purdy out of the game with an elbow injury. Redick also recovered a fumble from Josh Johnson replacing Purdy, who later suffered a concussion.

This forced Purdy back into the game, but his injury clearly played a role as the 49ers nearly stopped throwing, even a few points behind.

San Francisco’s bad luck as a quarterback finally became too much to overcome as his 12-game winning streak ended. The Niners lost Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo to season-ending injuries, and Purdy, the last pick in the April draft, lost for the first time as a starter.
