How Nick Bosa’s Mom Chose Joey’s Chargers-Jaguars Game Over 49ers-Seahawks

How Boz’s Mom Decided Between Joey and Nick’s Playoff Game, First Appearing Today on NBC Sports Bayarea.

It’s not easy being the supermom of two NFL stars. But Cheryl Boz does it.

This week’s mystery: Her sons — 49ers guard Nick Bosa and Los Angeles Chargers forward Joey Boz — both have playoff games on Saturday. However, time and distance are a problem: Nick is in Santa Clara, where the 49ers will take on the Seattle Seahawks at 1:30 p.m. PT, and Joey, on the opposite coast, will face the Jaguars in Jacksonville, Florida, at 5:15 p.m.

In the end, Boz’s mom had to decide which game to attend.

“I was praying to get to both,” Cheryl Ashley Adamson and Lisa McCaffrey told the Your Mom podcast. “Obviously, I was unlucky this weekend. Hopefully next weekend I will.

“Joey was injured this year. I was in a couple of his first games, I was in a game he lost and then he was out for 10 or 12 weeks. I went back to his first game which was two weeks ago. I think it’s just a numbers game, you know? For example, I need to be near him.”

Joey registered six tackles (two in a loss), 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble in the first two games of his seventh NFL season before losing in week three with a groin injury. He was out for 13 consecutive games before returning in Week 17, and he still finished the season with the sixth most sacks and first most quarterback hits with the Chargers.

“I was just with Nick, we had dinner after the game on Sunday. [against the Arizona Cardinals]Cheryl said. “And I’m like, ‘Baby, I’m sorry, but I’m going to go to Joey’s game,’ and he’s like, ‘Of course, Mom.’ “

While Joey was away, Nick cemented his position as NFL Defensive Player of the Year. He finished the season with a league-record 18.5 sacks, just one short of Aldon Smith’s single-season franchise record of 19.5 set in 2012.

The 49ers are on a 10 win streak in the postseason and will look to build it up so Mama Bosa can cheer on the DPOY leader next week at Levi’s Stadium.
