How a farm in North Texas is coping with growing demand for eggs

DALLAS. Consumers continue to feel inflation in grocery stores across the country. The price of eggs is among the products for which many buyers are seeing significant growth.

However, economic experts believe that the egg price situation is not a typical inflation story.

“Egg prices are rising because of the epidemic. Bird flu has hit the bird population,” said Michael Davis, professor at SMU Cox School of Business.

Davis follows trends. He said that fewer birds meant fewer eggs. The shortage equals the rise in prices. There is no exact indication of when egg prices might fall.

“It all depends on the health of the herds. If producers get the influenza situation under control, they will be able to restore their stock fairly quickly, and egg prices will start to fall, ”Davis explained.

Egg prices have doubled or even tripled in some parts of the country.

“I’m going to do a little, quick detour and see if my chicks have laid eggs,” said Danny George, Bonton Farms farm manager in South Dallas.

Workers at the city farm collect various vegetables, as well as raise livestock and produce eggs in the chicken coop.

George and the team say they are seeing a steady and growing demand for farm-raised eggs compared to store-bought eggs.

“The difference between store-bought eggs and farm-cooked eggs is that I have never bought an egg from the grocery store that has been stored for five weeks. I never bought a dozen eggs that lasted three weeks,” George explained.

Egg producers and consumers are doing their best. Most of the chicks at Bonton Farms are in their dormant or molting period. This also means that the birds are not producing enough eggs to meet local demand right now.

However, George said it was nature. expected on the farm. And that’s okay.

“These are not cars. They are God’s animals. They are chickens. They need to rest,” said George.
