Houston High School Student Says She Was Reprimanded For Working Out In A Sports Bra

A young cross-country and track and field athlete is upset after she says she got in trouble for training in a sports bra while boys were allowed to train shirtless.

HOUSTON. A Spring Branch ISD high school student raised her voice after she said she was reprimanded for training in a sports bra while male athletes trained shirtless.

The girl studies at Spring Woods High School and is on the women’s cross-country and athletics teams. She said that after complaining about gender differences between boys and girls, she was denied the award, which is “essential evidence for college admissions and recruitment,” according to the Texas American Civil Liberties Union.

She also objected to what she called the “unequal teaching and training of the women’s cross country team”.

The girl is a junior and said she was punished for wearing a sports bra while exercising in 100-degree heat. She claims she had the best record on the team and was the only student-athlete who never missed a workout. She said that although she still runs, her love for the sport is not what it used to be.

The ACLU sent a letter to SBISD on behalf of the student warning the school district that this action could result in a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment and Title IX. Click here to read the letter.

Here is the statement posted by Spring Branch ISD:

“ISD Spring Branch denies discrimination of any kind and treats students equally and fairly. We are aware of a situation with one student at one of our high schools who is unhappy with the SBISD practices that apply to all athletes on that campus. SBISD is currently investigating. this business”.
