The letter, which lawmakers personally delivered to Santos’ office on Capitol Hill, called the financial disclosure reports filed for his 2020 and 2022 campaigns “sparse and bewildering.”

“It is clear, at the very least, that he failed to provide timely disclosure reports on his latest campaign,” Torres and Goldman wrote.

“Moreover, his own public statements contradict some of the information included in the 2022 financial disclosures and confirm that the 2022 financial disclosures do not disclose other required information,” the letter said.

The complaint to a committee of members of Congress was filed the day after Campania Legal Centera non-partisan watchdog group, filed a complaint against Santos with the Federal Election Commission for allegedly violating numerous campaign finance laws.

On Tuesday, a letter from two Democratic lawmakers noted that media reports and “own confessions” by Santos in recent weeks showed that he “misled voters in his constituency about ethnicity, his religion, his education, his employment and professional activities, among other things. things.”

The Hill reported that in response to the complaint, Santos said, “They are free to do whatever they want.”

“I didn’t do anything unethical,” Santos said, according to The Hill.

On Monday, after the Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed new rules that would undermine the authority of the Office of Congressional Ethics to investigate lawmakers, Santos told an insider outlet, “I think that’s fantastic.”

The OCE, which is an independent, impartial body established by the House of Representatives, is distinct from the House Ethics Committee.

Citizens United and another advocacy group, American Bridge 21st Century, recently filed complaints against Santos with the Congressional Ethics Office.
