Here’s when you can start filing your 2022 tax return

The agency announced on Thursday that the official start date for the 2023 tax filing season is January 23, when the IRS will begin accepting and processing 2022 returns.

The news comes after the National Taxpayer Advocate said Wednesday that the IRS supervisory body sees “light at the end of the tunnel” in the IRS’ fight with customer service thanks to the hiring of thousands of new workers and tens of billions of dollars in new funding provided by the IRS in the Democratic climate and health.

Agency officials say taxpayers should expect a smoother tax filing season this year.

“We have trained thousands of new employees to answer calls and help people. While there is still a lot of work to be done after several difficult years, we expect people to see improvements this tax season,” said Acting IRS Commissioner Doug O’Donnell.

The IRS just added 5,000 new customer service representatives trained in taxpayer rights and technical account management, and are cutting hundreds of thousands of backlogs over the past tax season.

The Republican majority in the House of Representatives has vowed to withdraw nearly $71 billion that Congress provided to the IRS, even as the bill they approved on Monday is unlikely to move in the Democratic-led Senate.

The deadline for most taxpayers to file their 2022 tax returns, renew the file, and pay their dues is April 18. This is because the regular April 15 filing date falls on a weekend, while the DC Emancipation Day holiday falls on April 17.

Taxpayers requesting an extension will have to file by October 16.
