Hawaiians convicted of racially motivated attack on a white man

Federal prosecutors said Friday that two Hawaiians were convicted of a 2014 racially motivated attack on a white man who tried to move into their area.

The Ministry of Justice said Kaulana Alo-Kaonohi, 33, was sentenced to 6.5 years in prison. Levi Aki Jr., 33, was sentenced to more than four years in prison.

“Defendants in this case almost killed a man because they thought he didn’t belong to their area because of the color of his skin,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney General Kristen Clark of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

The victim named “CK” was unpacking his belongings with his elderly uncle on February 13, 2014 in Maui when Alo-Kaonohi and Aki broke into the house and demanded that he pack his things and leave. According to prosecutors, at some point they threatened to tie him up and drag him away.

When the victim said he owned a house on the property, Alo-Kaonohi ran his index finger over C.K.’s jaw and said, “Your skin color is wrong.”

Then he hit him on the head with a shovel. According to the authorities, after K.K. began to collect his things, he was attacked a second time. Aki headbutted him and hit him in the face with a shovel. The victim suffered a concussion and lost consciousness.

When he woke up, he was kicked and two of his ribs were broken.

“No white people will ever live here,” one of the defendants said during the attack.

A few months after the incident, Alo-Kaonohi attacked another white man at a barbershop. According to prosecutors, he approached the man from behind and punched him in the head several times until the victim lost consciousness.
