Governor Ron DeSantis urges President Joe Biden to let unvaccinated Novak Djokovic into country to compete in Miami Open

TALLAHASSEE, Florida. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis sent a letter to President Joe Biden demanding that Novak Djokovic be allowed to enter the country to compete in the Miami Open.

Djokovic not vaccinated against COVID-19 and the US does not allow unvaccinated foreigners to enter the country.

“While Mr. Djokovic certainly poses a significant competitive threat to his fellow tennis professionals, his presence in our country does not pose a major threat to health or public safety,” DeSantis said in a letter Monday.

The White House said Biden plans to lift the COVID-19 health emergency in May. It’s unclear if the travel rule will be dropped at the same time because it’s built into a separate statement.

The Miami Open is considered one of the biggest tournaments outside of the four Grand Slams. As the No. 1 tennis player in the world, Djokovic will be considered the favorite to win the trophy.

“There can be no doubt that his participation in the Miami Open will be a huge boon to both the prized tournament and the tennis community as a whole,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis asked the president to return to him by Friday.

Miami Open kicks off March 22nd.
