GOP spokesman fires back after Democrats accuse conservatives of being ‘hooligans’ over transgender issues

Rep. Nancy Mays (RSC) disapproved of the Democrat’s description of Republicans.

During a House Oversight Committee hearing on Human Resources Management (OPM) on Thursday, Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.) disagreed with his Republican colleagues’ comments about the transgender community.

“I want to focus just on all the comments that have been made regarding gender affirming care and the transgender community,” Gomez began.

He continued, “And the reason is, you know, I think this is a deliberate attack on this community. It’s not just about this committee, it’s about the budget committee, appropriations, speeches. It is the agreed upon strategy of the Republican majority to make this community the scapegoat. And they are just, in my opinion, hooligans.

Gomez continued:

“You are literally starting a fight with one of the most marginalized, one of the most discriminated groups in our country. You know, that’s who they pick a fight with… Here’s one of the highest suicide rates. It has one of the highest unemployment rates. It has one of the highest poverty rates. And here is one of the highest rates of homelessness.”

Finally, Gomez said: “I personally find it offensive when they constantly harass this community. You are not being rude. You are not patriots. You are a bully. And I think they need to stop.”

Mays disagreed with his decision to portray Republicans as bullies.

She criticized the term “gender-affirming care” and OPM’s failure to report “whether the federal government is funding gender reassignment surgery for children.”

“Some on the left are calling it a gender-affirming exit,” Mays said, adding: “Frankly, it’s even worse. There is no scientific evidence to support this. And just because someone disagrees with cutting off a 15-year-old’s genitals doesn’t mean we’re bullying kids – I find that funny.”

Mays went on to suggest that adults “do whatever you want” but added, “By God, don’t do this to our kids.”

Finally, she said, “I find it offensive that my colleagues across the aisle are calling us bullies because we don’t want to chop off a 15-year-old girl’s breasts, and we certainly don’t want the federal government to fund it.”

The World Health Organization describes gender-affirming care as social, psychological, behavioral, and medical interventions “designed to support and reaffirm an individual’s gender identity.”
