GOP Rep. Gallagher: We just want sensible rules like requiring legislators to pass budgets coupled with raising the debt ceiling

On the Fox Business Network’s Varney & Co. on Thursday, Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) said we should raise the debt ceiling and avoid a default, but all Republicans want is some fiscal reform, and one of the opportunities is “no budget, no salary,” which would prevent legislators from getting paid when they don’t pass budgets.

Gallagher stated: “We are asking for some reasonable reforms coupled with an increase in the debt ceiling. And I believe the American people have given House Republicans a majority to stop the rampant spending we’ve seen from the Biden administration. With inflation continuing to afflict Americans and the public debt continuing to rise at an astronomical rate, we must find a way to bring in at least some basic financial prudence. There [are] there are different options. I have a bill called the “Trust Act” that will set up task forces to bail out all the various trust funds that go insolvent. We could do this, we could go to a biennial budgeting process, we could not pass the budget, we could not pay, so that legislators, members of Congress don’t get paid every time we don’t do our main appropriation work. There are smart things we could do with increasing the debt ceiling. This is what we ask for.”
