FWC says man charged with hammering shark on Florida beach

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Florida. – The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission said it now recommends that a man be charged with beating a shark with a hammer.

The FWC spokesman reiterated his recommendation to News 6 on Thursday afternoon. The agency has yet to say what charges the man could face, but a press release from the FWC is expected sometime Thursday.

News 6 contacted the state’s attorney’s office to see if prosecutors had decided to file charges against the man. We are still waiting for a response. News 6 decided not to identify the man accused of beating the shark as he has not been arrested.

It comes more than a month after a man was caught on camera hitting a shark in the head with a hammer several times. According to the Indian Harbor Police Department, the attack took place on December 20 in Bicentennial Beach Park.

The video shows a man hitting a shark in the head with a hammer on a Florida beach, prompting wildlife officials to investigate.

According to the agency, two men were fishing when the shark was pulled ashore. Video from a 24/7 surf camera at the Harbor House Oceanfront shows one of the men hit him repeatedly on the head with a hammer.

The video then shows one of the men trying to release the shark back into the ocean and dragging it into the water.

The incident comes months after the FWC investigated two men who dragged a shark across the shores of New Smyrna Beach and stabbed it in the head. However, officials said it was legal.

“Anglers often euthanize sharks after disembarking for ethical and safety reasons. This video is not currently under investigation as there was no violation of state law regarding the method of harvesting,” FWC officials said in a statement in August.
