Fundraiser supports colon cancer fight

Colon cancer, a disease that affects one in 24 individuals over their lifetime, is a significant health concern with 75 percent of those diagnosed having no prior family history of the disease. Despite being the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths, colon cancer remains a topic often avoided in conversations.

It is crucial to note that not all individuals with colon cancer will experience symptoms before their diagnosis. Therefore, waiting for symptoms to manifest before undergoing screening is not advisable. Early detection through regular screenings starting at age 45 can make a significant impact as colon cancer is both preventable and treatable.

The Colon Cancer Coalition’s annual fundraising event, Get Your Rear In Gear, plays a vital role in funding local community programs in San Antonio. These programs aim to increase screening rates, support research efforts, raise awareness about the signs and symptoms of colon cancer, and provide assistance to patients and caregivers.

This year, the fundraising goal for Get Your Rear In Gear is set at $50,000. The event includes a 5K run/walk scheduled for Sunday, April 7, 2024, at Morgan’s Wonderland Sports in San Antonio, TX. The event will commence with registration and packet pickup at 6:30 a.m., followed by an opening ceremony at 7:30 a.m. Additionally, there will be a Kids’ Fun Run and a timed 5K run, with online registration open until Thursday, April 2.

Participants of the event are encouraged to join the fight against colon cancer and educate themselves about this preventable disease.
