Fort Myers City Council amends ordinance to allow trailers to be used as temporary housing for property owners.

FORT MYERS, Florida. The City of Fort Myers is following suit, as are other counties and cities, in making it easier for you to rebuild and repair your home after Hurricane Yan.

City Council amends ordinance to allow mobile homes, travel trailers, or mobile homes as temporary housing. All this would be in the event of an emergency, such as a hurricane.

The new amendment allows the use of trailers for 18 months. But this period can be extended if the council sees the need.

It’s been over 3 months since Hurricane Ian and the council say they understand there are still people in the city recovering. To help with this recovery, this amendment will allow these residents to use temporary housing, such as a motorhome, on their property while recovering. Until tonight, the use of trailers was not allowed at all.

Fox 4 reported last week that FEMA is now allowing these trailers to be placed in flood zones and is starting to deliver trailers to residents. This means the move is timely and will go a long way in rebuilding Fort Myers, council member Liston Bochette explained.

“It speaks to how the community cares about each other, sees the needs, and sees that the neighbors care more about each other than about themselves,” Boschette said.

This will become the new standard for the city in case of future emergencies.

According to our latest report, FEMA has already placed 15 temporary trailers in Fort Myers. Over 2,000 people are still waiting tonight.
