Former Trump lawyer reappointed to state Supreme Court in Wisconsin

A lawyer for former President Donald Trump who tried to undo his battlefield defeat in Wisconsin has been reappointed by four conservative state Supreme Court justices for a second term on a committee that advises judges on judicial conduct.

The reappointment of Jim Trupi to the commission was approved by the Wisconsin Supreme Court on Thursday in a 4-3 vote, with all three liberal justices dissenting, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.

Trupi’s first term on the Judicial Conduct Advisory Committee was due to expire on Tuesday. After being reappointed by the court, he will remain on the committee until March 7, 2026. Members of the nine-member advisory committee are limited to two consecutive three-year terms.

His reappointment will come about a month before an April 4 election that will determine control of the court for at least the next two years. One of the four Conservative judges who voted to reappoint Trupi is resigning.

Trupi is a former Dane County District Court judge who represented Trump in 2020 as he tried to reverse President Joe Biden’s victory in Wisconsin. Trupi also informed the Republicans of their plan to force fake voters to cast their votes for Trump in Wisconsin even though he lost.

Trupi is the defendant in a lawsuit brought by Democrats seeking $2.4 million in damages from fake voters and the lawyers who advised them. Also Thursday, liberal lawyers filed an ethics complaint against Michael Gableman, a former Wisconsin Supreme Court justice hired by Republicans to review the 2020 election. The complaint, filed with the Office of Attorney Regulation, alleges that Gableman “supported conspiracy theories, spread lies, denied facts, questioned the character of people he considered his opponents, and abused the legal process.”

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said in 2021 when he hired Gableman that he was “supremely confident” in his abilities. But when he fired him in August 2022, Vos called him a “disgrace.”

The complaint will be heard behind closed doors, and if any disciplinary action is recommended, ultimately the Wisconsin Supreme Court will have to decide whether to impose any sanctions.
