Former Alabama police officer charged with reckless killing of pedestrian

A former Tuscumbia police officer has been charged with negligent homicide in connection with the death of a pedestrian on the side of a road last October.

An indictment returned this week charges 34-year-old James Keith “Jay” Steward with the murder of Terry Wayne Hinton when he hit him with his car, according to court records.

According to WHNT-TV, at the time of the accident, the steward was driving a police car. The indictment charges Steward with being under the influence of a controlled substance, “and/or speeding and/or driving on the wrong side of the road.”

Defense attorney Tony Hughes said Steward reported to the Colbert County Sheriff’s Department on Friday morning. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday.

Hughes said his understanding is that Steward, at least for now, is being held without bail under the new “Ania Law,” which lists offenses for which there is no guarantee of pre-trial bail.

“We will have a hearing this Monday. Our team is currently investigating this case,” Hughes wrote in an email.

The case is being investigated by the Alabama Attorney General.
