Ford recalls 462,000 SUVs due to rearview camera display failure

Ford Motor said on Friday that it is recalling 462,000 SUVs worldwide because the video output could fail, making it impossible to display the image from the rear view camera.

The American automaker said the recall applies to select 2020-2023 Explorer, Lincoln Aviator and 2020-2022 Lincoln Corsair vehicles equipped with 360-degree cameras and includes 382,000 vehicles in the United States.

Ford said it has reports of 17 minor accidents related to the recall issue and over 2,100 warranty reports, but no reports of injuries. The recall expands to replace the 228,000 vehicle recall in 2021. Dealers will update the imaging module software and vehicles previously updated under the old recall will require a new update.

Ford said the automaker was contacted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in late 2021 and 2022 about reports of a blue image on the rear camera display after the 2021 recall was completed, prompting the company to investigate.

The NHTSA launched an investigation in August 2021 after Ford recalled 620,246 vehicles in 2020 due to another rear camera issue. The investigation is checking whether Ford has recalled vehicles in a timely manner and whether it has recalled a sufficient number of vehicles.

Ford has issued other recalls related to the rearview camera in recent years, including a recall of 47,000 2021-2022 Broncos in the US, as the rearview camera image may still be displayed after the reverse event has ended, which can be distracting to the driver.
