Florida teacher arrested for allegedly inappropriately touching students

A substitute teacher was arrested in Florida after he was accused of child molestation at an elementary school, officials said.

Wolfgang Sprenger, 83, was detained and charged after an investigation into the allegations, the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office said.

On January 31, Hernando Elementary School staff informed the Deputy Director of School Resources that a substitute teacher may have inappropriately touched some students. The Citrus County School District immediately suspended Sprenger as a substitute teacher, and the sheriff’s office opened an investigation into the allegations.

The Sheriff’s Office’s Special Victims Unit identified several underage victims as well as several underage witnesses. All of the victims were interviewed and stated that Sprenger touched them inappropriately. Detectives also obtained other evidence supporting the victims’ claims.

Sprenger was arrested on Thursday following an investigation.

He was charged with two counts of indecent and lustful molestation of a child under 12 years of age, four counts of indecent and lascivious conduct, and one count of aiding the commission of offenses against a child.

“This case shows how a predator can and will seek trust in order to gain access to children,” Sheriff Mike Prendergast said in a statement. “Sprenger undermined the trust of the children he was supposed to teach and the trust of our society in him. The classroom should be a nurturing and safe environment, not a playground for a predator like Sprenger. I hope that this arrest will be the starting point for the healing of their victims.”

Sprenger is being held at the Citrus County Detention Center without bail.
