Florida Senate Republican Files ‘Constitutional Wear’ Bill

TALLAHASSEE, Florida. — A Republican in the Senate on Thursday filed a bill that would allow people to carry concealed firearms without a license, after the issue began moving forward in the House of Representatives this week.

The bill, introduced by Senator Jay Collins of Tampa, also includes other proposals, such as requirements related to school safety.

Florida has long required that people obtain state licenses to carry concealed weapons. The bill (SB 150) would eliminate this requirement, although people with concealed weapons would be required to carry valid identification and “show such identification when required by a law enforcement officer.”

The House Subcommittee on Constitutional Rights, Rule of Law, and Government Operations on Tuesday approved a bill (HB 543) that would make changes to concealed weapons, a concept that proponents call “constitutional carry.”

For example, the Senate bill would allow private schools to participate in Florida’s controversial “guardians” program, which allows school employees to carry guns on campuses, and create the Florida Safe Schools for Dogs Program, which will be designed to add firearms. – detective dogs.

“This comprehensive legislation ensures that our laws respect the constitutional rights of law-abiding Florida residents, while at the same time including valuable law enforcement-recommended tools that will improve the safety of our schools and communities,” said Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, D-Naples. in a prepared statement.
