Florida man convicted of New Mexico attack that killed 4

ALBUQERC, New Mexico (AP) — A Florida man who New Mexico authorities say drove recklessly before causing a hit-and-run that killed four people has been sentenced.

The U.S. Attorney for the District of New Mexico announced Thursday that Alexis Riego, 50, of Merritt Island, Florida, was sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison for the 2019 crash.

He will then serve three years of parole.

In September, a federal jury found him guilty of four counts of manslaughter and two counts of assault causing serious bodily harm.

According to court documents, Riego was driving a commercial vehicle on September 7, 2019, when it crashed into a line of vehicles at a construction site on Interstate 40 near Laguna Pueblo. Six cars collided as a result of the accident. In addition to the four dead, two more were injured.

Prosecutors say Riego was speeding and using his cell phone. They say Riego was talking via video link at that time.
