Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis speaks to the Harris County GOP during a fundraising visit to Houston

DeSantis kept the media out of the George R. Brown Convention Center when he spoke to the Harris County GOP.

HOUSTON. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis stopped by Bayou for a fundraiser Friday night.

DeSantis kept the media out of the George R. Brown Convention Center when he spoke to the Harris County GOP.

It happened when DeSantis was contemplating a race for the White House.

Several groups marched outside the center to protest during his visit to Houston. Several teachers took part in protests through “Read for Rebellion”. This is a silent “reading” to draw attention to Florida laws that restrict access to certain books in schools, including LGBTQ+ materials.

“A large percentage of my students are LGBTQIA+ to one degree or another, almost all of my students are either black or Hispanic. I want them to be able to read books that represent them,” said teacher Michelle Palmer. “Besides, I’m a teacher of history and public administration, and this is also under attack.”

Other groups have stated that they are anti-fascists and have stated that DeSantis is a threat.

“Apart from Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis is the most dangerous politician in this country,” said Houston United Front Against Fascism organizer David Michael Smith, Ph.D.

The Harris County Republican Party confirmed that the media were not invited to DeSantis’ events during his time here.

However, Harris County GOP Chair Cindy Siegel sent the following statement:

“Along with Texas, Florida is one of the most prosperous and free states in the country thanks to the leadership of Governor Ron DeSantis. His decisive action and bold political program led to historic achievements for the Republican Party and the people of Florida. We are thrilled to host Governor DeSantis at this year’s Lincoln Reagan Dinner as he shares his Freedom Plan with Harris County.”
