Family forced to cancel vacation due to Starbucks tip error

An man from Oklahoma said he was forced to cancel a family vacation after a couple of Starbucks coffees cost him almost $5,000 due to a tip error.

Jesse O’Dell reportedly thought he spent about $12 on coffee but found $4,456.27 from Starbucks on his bank statement after his wife’s credit card was declined while shopping for shoes and clothes ahead of a scheduled trip.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes,” O’Dell said. Kansas City Star said. “I don’t have that kind of money to just play with.”

O’Dell said he disputed the charge, but first Starbucks told him the purchase was legal and that he introduced a $4,444.44 tip.

“I know how to push buttons. I didn’t press that button,” O’Dell told the Star. “If it wasn’t a barista, then it’s definitely your chain, which is a really big problem.”

O’Dell claimed that Starbucks eventually sent him refund checks that didn’t come back when he tried to deposit them, which upset him enough to attract Tulsa Police Department.

“At this point, I started to get serious,” O’Dell said.

O’Dell said the company told him the checks were returned due to a typo and then sent him another round.

The new checks are in his bank account, O’Dell said, adding that it will be a relief when they are cleared and he can get away from the stressful situation.
