Family asks for help with funeral expenses after drunk driving leads to death of Watsonville woman

WATSONVILLE, CA (KION-TV) – UPDATE March 7, 2023 12:38 PM– Relatives and friends are turning to the public for help after a drunk-driving accident results in the death of a beloved Watsonville woman.

Breanna Romero, 26, has died in an accident on Holohan Road approaching Grimmer Road, CHP reports. Officers said the woman, who was arrested for drunk driving, was driving a 2007 Volvo XC90 heading south, crossed a solid double line and collided with Romero’s car.

A woman has died in a two-car accident in Watsonville.

CHP Santa Cruz announced that a 26-year-old woman from Watsonville has died after a two-vehicle collision at Holohan and Grimmer Road.

Officers said the accident happened at 10:22 p.m. on Saturday evening. A 2007 Volvo XC90 was driving south on Holohan Road and approaching Grimmer Road at an undetermined speed. At the same time, a 2015 Hyundai Elantra was heading north on Holohan Road and approaching the Volvo.

For an unknown reason, 38-year-old Angelique Varon of Watsonville, who was driving a Volvo, crossed solid double lines and collided head-on with a Hyundai.

Hyundai driver Breanna Romero, 26, died at the scene. A Hyundai passenger, 25-year-old Kianna Hughes from the Moreno Valley, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Natividad Hospital.

Varon was arrested on charges of drunk driving and was also taken to Natividad Hospital due to her serious injuries.

Volvo passenger Jesús Rocha Ayala, 25, from Watsonville, rushed himself to Watsonville Community Hospital to receive treatment for his serious injuries.

CHP says the role of alcohol and drugs is being investigated as a contributing factor to the accident.
