Shower smarter while saving money, water and your skin with these tips

The average family uses about 40 gallons of water per day for showers, which is almost 17% of residential water consumption.

You can save a lot of water and energy by simply limiting your shower time to around five minutes.

If you’re ready for an easy DIY project, install a water-saving shower head. You should look for one with the WaterSense EPA label, which limits shower output to two gallons per minute.

This can help save 2,700 gallons of water per year and reduce the load on the water heater, which also saves energy. If you have an electric water heater, this can save enough energy savings for your home for 11 days.

If you’re worried that a water-saving stream won’t do its job, in many cases you won’t really be able to tell the difference. To qualify for the WaterSense label, a showerhead must have certain jet shapes and meet other criteria that are at least as good, if not better, than other showerheads on the market.

A hot shower may be good for your brain, but warm water is better for dry skin, eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis. Don’t forget to apply moisturizer after your shower.

If you want to save even more water, instead of just waiting for the water to heat up, you can use it to wash your face or brush your teeth. Consumer Reports has even more easy water saving tips you can read here.
