Exclusive – West Virginia State Treasurer Riley Moore: ESG Politics is ‘Merge of Corporate and Liberal Political Power’

West Virginia State Treasurer Riley Moore (R) told Breitbart News in an exclusive interview that 2022 has been an important year for exposing the Environment, Society and Governance (ESG) policy movement, which he describes as “a fusion of corporate and liberal political power “. “.

Moore, who has already announced he is running for Congress in 2024, said the Republican-controlled House of Representatives will help expose the political movement, as House Republicans have already said they will launch an antitrust investigation into the matter.

Asked how he felt about the efforts to combat and expose the political movement over the past year, he agreed that there were “many movements” in 2022 that began with him withdrawing his state’s BlackRock funds due to that the world’s largest asset manager was promoting a political movement.

Last year, Moore became one of the leading opponents of financial firms incorporating ESG into their lending decisions and led a 16-state coalition to push back against the divestment movement. West Virginia was also the first state to withdraw investment funds from firms such as BlackRock that pursue “clean zero” investment strategies that would ultimately cripple the state’s fossil fuel industry. Politico previously noted “many bills against ESG circulating in state legislatures across the country” following a multi-state coalition such as Senate Bill 262, which ultimately allowed Moore, as state treasurer, “to publish a list of companies deemed to be involved in ‘energy boycotts’ and ban them from winning government banking contracts.

“When I left Blackrock in January of this year,” Moore explained to Breitbart News. “It was not a hot topic at the time. And since then, we’ve seen things take off. You know, obviously it was the first state to pull out of BlackRock, then it was also the first state to publish a limited list of financial institutions where we contracted certain financial institutions and canceled contracts based on the fossil fuel boycott.”

Moore added that a great year of exposing the environmental, social and governance policy movement was “capped off” with House Republicans launching an antitrust investigation into the political movement.

Several Republicans sent a letter to the 100+ Climate Action Steering Committee — a group that pushes corporations to “take the necessary action on climate change” and spearheads the leftist ESG movement — demanding documents showing the group is “facilitating and coordinating companies’ efforts. to achieve goals related to ESG”, since December 2016.

“I think that, you know, there is no better disinfectant than sunlight, right? And so I think we’re going to get a lot of congressional sunshine here, which will also help us at the state level determine how we’re going to proceed in the future,” Moore said of the prospect of further investigation into the case. ESG movement. “I think [the Republican-controlled House is] went in the right direction… [Congressional investigation] going to help the states because we need this additional information to try and make some decisions.”

Also, while some observers have compared environmental, social and governance policy (ESG) to critical race theory (CRT), Moore noted that “it’s much more complicated”.

“CRT was obviously a theory and lens through which to look at the world as it is connected to what they call a kind of pervasive and systemic racism. This is something that pervades every aspect of financial services, industry and sector,” Moore said. “I think that’s why there’s going to be a lot of layers to dig into here. So I don’t think it will go away anytime soon. Because we, I think, are winning, but we have not won. And I think there’s a lot more work to be done, not only in the next couple of years, but, I would say, in the next few years, to be able to, hopefully, bring the free market back to freedom. ”

In addition, when he announced his bid for the state’s second congressional district last year, Moore said he would be a champion “for American energy against corporate activity.” He is seeking to replace Rep. Alex Mooney (R-WV), who currently represents the congressional district, but has announced his intention to remove Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) in 2024.
