Exclusive – West Virginia Poll: AG Patrick Morrisey leads double-digit GOP gubernatorial primary

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey will enter his state’s GOP gubernatorial primary by a sizable double-digit margin if he decides to run, a new poll obtained exclusively by Breitbart News shows.

A poll commissioned by Black Bear PAC and conducted by National Research Inc. shows Morrisey leading the crowded field by 13 percent. Black Bear PAC ended 2022 with roughly $2 million on hand and is expected to spend heavily supporting Morrisey – a source familiar with the group said he expects to raise between $5 million and $6 million this year – if he run for governor of West Virginia. .

Morrissey, who scored 28 percent, leads West Virginia State Delegate Moore Capito — son of US Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) — by 13 points. Capito fell 15 percent and West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Warner fell 11 percent. Every other candidate named is single digits behind, and 29 percent are undecided.

The poll of 600 likely West Virginia GOP voters was conducted from February 23 to 28 and has a margin of error of four percent.

“Had Attorney General Patrick Morrisey announced his candidacy for governor of West Virginia, he would have immediately taken the lead in the Republican primary,” National Research’s Adam Geller and Samantha Barthel wrote in a poll transcript obtained by Breitbart News. “This is based on several factors, including his lead in a hypothetical multi-candidate vote, his higher name and image ratings compared to the rest, his high job approval, and his unusually informed ballots after voters become aware of his record as Attorney General”.

Morrisey’s approval rating is also very high among respondents, with 67 percent approving of his work and only 18 percent disapproving, with 15 percent unsure.

Morrisey is reportedly considering running for governor in 2024 in West Virginia if current governor Jim Justice runs for the US Senate, as many expect him to. Justice, a Republican with close ties to former President Donald Trump, would have easily taken the lead in a Senate race that could also include Rep. Alex Mooney (R-WV). The seat they will run for is currently held by Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), who has yet to say whether he intends to run for re-election. It will be very difficult for Manchin to take that seat as a Democrat in a red state like West Virginia, although he has done so in the past.

This poll also shows that Trump’s approval rating is extremely high among would-be West Virginia GOP voters, with 79 percent of respondents viewing the former president positively and only 18 percent viewing Trump negatively.
