Elkhorn Road closed due to flooding from a dam failure on the Paharo River.

LOS LOMAS, Calif. (KION-TV) — A dam failure in the Pajaro River is currently impacting nearby roads.

On Sunday morning, Monterey County officials closed off Elkhorn Road as the road was inundated by floodwaters from the Pajaro River. The road between Osborne and Strawberry Road was flooded, and to some neighbors it was a familiar place.

Tom Simmons lived nearby on Easton Road and the flooding of the road reminded him of the 1995 flood that hit 28 years ago on a Sunday.

“I’ve been here for over 40 years, and 28 years ago when the flood happened, that’s exactly what happened then,” Simmons said.

County officials said that even when the water recedes, the road cannot be opened immediately because it could cause significant damage.

Drivers are asked not to drive on flooded roads.
