Eight people have been arrested as a result of illegal street racing in Dallas, police said.

The arrests come after police received numerous complaints about street racing in the TEXpress lanes on Interstate 635.

DALLAS. Police said eight people were arrested in connection with illegal street racing in Dallas.

The arrests came on Sunday after police received complaints from citizens about street racing in the TEXpress lanes on Interstate 635 in recent months, police said.

Eight people on motorcycles were detained off I-635 near Luna Road.

Dallas Police said its street racing task force was investigating the case with the assistance of the Farm Branch Police Department.

In a Sunday evening update, police said six people were arrested for racing on the highway, one was arrested on a warrant for obstructing the highway, and an eighth was taken into custody for watching the race.

Details of the operation were not immediately disclosed.

Illegal street racing has gained attention in Texas in recent weeks after a viral social media video showed a “street occupancy” incident in Austin. The video shows the crowd pushing the police car away and even throwing fireworks at it.

On February 23, Gov. Greg Abbott announced the formation of a statewide task force to combat “street occupants.” The Governor said he is directing the Texas Department of Public Safety to work with local authorities to investigate and prosecute those involved in the power grab incidents.
