Drivers ignore closure signs and crash into a pothole on a devastated road in California

“We can’t make up this stuff.” “THIS CAN’T BE REAL!” “There is no excuse.”

These are just some of the things the Central Valley California Highway Patrol had to say recently after several drivers ignored road closure signs and ended up crashing into a huge hole in a washed-out section of the roadway.

Last week, Tracy’s CHP office posted on social media at least two instances of drivers ignoring closure signs on Casson Road outside Tracy and driving straight into the funnel.

In the second case, which was reported last Saturday, the driver was fined. It is not clear if the driver was mentioned in the first case, which was reported last Thursday.

The emergency department did not specify whether anyone was injured in the accident.

“ROAD CLOSED signs and barricades are strategically placed for your safety,” the CHP wrote on social media. “DO NOT drive past the blocked road. If you encounter a blocked road, turn around and find another route.”

CHP stated that the damaged storage pond eroded the section of Casson Road between Durham Ferry Road and the entrance to the San Joaquin River Club. This part of the roadway eventually collapsed in mid-January.

It’s unclear when the road will open. The CHP said it would be a long-term closure.
