BIG SUR, Calif. (KION-TV) Monterey County officials announced that residents and businesses located within the closure of Highway 1 between Paul’s Slide and Polaris Rockfall will receive supplies by helicopter Thursday and Friday.

The County Emergency Management Department is partnering with Joint Command, Big Sur Fire and
the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol Aviation Unit to schedule relief supplies to affected residents.

Here is a schedule of these delivery times.

Thursday, January 26 – CHP helicopter operations will raise large
supplies of bottled water and ready meals to be delivered to Sand Dollar
Day use area. This will take place from noon to 2 pm

Friday, January 27 – The helicopter will deliver food, medicine, pet food and other essentials. This will also occur from noon to 2 pm in the sand dollar zone.

County officials said the community gathering point within the blocked highway would be in the US Forest Service’s sand dollar day use area. Big Sur Fire will be in the day use area to coordinate the distribution of supplies between residents and businesses.

Officials said the Big Sur Community Association is working with affected residents by coordinating food orders with Safeway at the Crossroads mall in Carmel-by-the-Sea. The association also worked with the Monterey County SPCA to deliver livestock and pets to affected residents.

Officials said any food left over from those deliveries would be at the Pacific Valley School in Big Sur.

All agencies involved are scheduling additional air cargo over the next few weeks depending on road and weather conditions.
