After all, Discovery+ is not going away.

According to a source familiar with the company’s plans, Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of CNN, has decided to continue offering the Discovery+ streaming platform in the US. This marks a stark departure from the media company’s previous plan to merge Discovery+ with HBO Max into one streaming service. This was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

The company hasn’t changed its plan to merge HBO Max and Discovery+ into an “expanded platform” later this year, a key synergy that Warner Bros. Discovery determined after the merger in April 2022. CEO David Zaslav has often said that customers want fewer, not more, streaming options to choose from.

But the company fears it could lose a significant number of subscribers if it forces Discovery+ customers to pay more for the combo app, the Journal reports.

Discovery+ costs $6.99 per month without ads and $4.99 per month with ads. It’s a lot cheaper than HBO Max, which costs $15.99 a month without ads. The ad tier costs $9.99 per month. Warner Bros. Discovery did not say how much the combined service would cost subscribers.

HBO Max and Discovery+ do not have significant genre overlap. HBO Max features Warner Bros. movies, Turner classics and prestigious HBO documentaries, comedy and drama specials like The Last of Us. Discovery+ includes a heavy dose of reality TV, including Food Network and TLC shows like Chopped.

Warner Bros. Discovery does not disclose the number of subscribers on each platform, but it currently has approximately 95 million subscribers worldwide on the HBO, HBO Max and Discovery+ channels combined.

Wall Street analysts expect the company to provide more details on the combined platform when Warner Bros. Discovery will report earnings on February 23rd.
