Denton Police Investigate Murder of UNT Worker

The man shot dead this week in a Denton apartment has now been confirmed to be an employee of the University of North Texas.

The university said that 43-year-old Corey Johnson worked in the cafeteria for two years.

Police said they responded to a call about gunshots on the 1000 block of Eagle Drive shortly before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

While on duty, law enforcement officers found a block in which the door was slightly ajar.

“As they approached, they heard someone calling for help. Officers went inside and found our victim, Mr Corey Johnson, inside with multiple gunshot wounds,” said Denton Police spokeswoman Amy Cunningham.

The police took life-saving measures and called an ambulance, but the victim was later pronounced dead in the hospital.

Police said Johnson, 43, lived in an apartment on Eagle Drive and worked at UNT, which is just a short distance away.

On Friday, UNT President Dr. Neil Smatresk issued the following statement: “Yesterday we learned of the loss of one of our own, Corey Johnson, a 43-year-old member of the Catering Service who helped care for our students for two years. years old. Please join me in expressing our most sincere condolences to Mr. Johnson’s family, friends and colleagues.”

Denton PD investigators are looking for clues, including possible CCTV footage.

It is unclear if Johnson was able to provide police with any information prior to his death.

They also turn to the public for help.

“The investigation is still very early. We also hope that anyone who may know something will call us and provide this information, ”Cunningham said.

Denton police believe this off-campus fatal shooting was an isolated incident, and investigators are asking the public to help find the killer.

Denton County CrimeStoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 per case.
