Dallas Weather: Power outages possible due to North Texas icing

Power crews in North Texas expect to be busy Wednesday as ice buildup could cause problems with power lines and break tree branches.

Steady freezing rain is expected on Wednesday afternoon and night.

“There is a risk of increasing ice-related hazards tonight and tonight,” FOX 4 meteorologist Evan Andrews said. “We all tend to focus on the ground, but this is with trees and power lines as the main players, and some of them will be destroyed.”

The National Weather Service forecasts ice thickness along the I-35 corridor and to the west.

“Trees and power lines will continue to get covered in ice, so the icing problems will worsen later today and tonight,” Andrews said. “We can, I would even say we will see power outage problems.”

In some areas to the east, there are already problems caused by ice.

As of 9:30 am Wednesday, Oncor is reporting more than 1,800 outages affecting more than 60,000 customers.

Oncor says crews have been working all night and are trying to restore power this morning.

They say if you see power lines, call 911.

These outages are not related to a problem with the Texas power grid, as was the case during the deadly winter storms of 2021.

The ERCOT dashboard shows that supply is expected to exceed demand on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the head of ERCOT said he did not expect emergencies due to this round of severe weather and no requests for people to save electricity.
