Dallas police say people were impersonating police officers to block traffic and stop people.

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) The Dallas Police Department is warning drivers about people posing as police officers.

The DPD says they have been investigating recent incidents in which suspects used red and blue lights on their vehicles to cut through traffic and stop people.

They did not specify when or where the incidents took place.

Impersonating a police officer is a 3rd degree felony, punishable by two to 10 years.

DPD says that if you think you’re being pulled over by someone pretending to be a police officer, remember the following:

  • Put on your flashing lights, obey the speed limit, and call 911 from your mobile phone. Tell the 911 dispatcher that you are concerned that someone is trying to stop you in an unmarked car, it may not be a police officer. Ask the dispatcher to check if the car that is trying to stop you really belongs to a law enforcement officer. If you don’t have a cell phone, drive to a well-lit, busy place, such as the parking lot of a busy store.
  • Do not stop or get out of your vehicle until the dispatcher confirms that you are being stopped by a legitimate police officer.
  • If the dispatcher cannot confirm that a police officer is stopping you, stay on the line with the dispatcher and call the police for help. Drive carefully to a safe place, such as the local police station.
  • report anything suspicious to the police; don’t wait to make a report.
