Dallas officers take part in de-escalation drill thanks to Senator John Cornyn’s new law

Texas Senator John Cornyn was in Dallas to praise a new grant that will make de-escalation training more accessible.

Senator Cornyn and Dallas leaders watched cadets and active duty officers from the Dallas Police Department take part in Wednesday’s exercise.

The senator wrote the De-Escalation Law Enforcement Training Act, which was signed into law in December.

Now, $124 million in federal funding is available to law enforcement and mental health advocacy groups to train techniques that can help resolve conflicts peacefully, without physical confrontation or injury.

“I think it’s really about two words. Respect – Respect for the men and women in blue and respect for the community they serve. And trust that comes from mutual respect,” said Senator Cornyn.

Cornyn said he saw the need for training after the death of George Floyd, as discussions intensified about improving relations between law enforcement and the community.
