Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson Unopposed in May Election

Mayor of Dallas Eric Johnson for the second term will lead the ninth largest city in the country.

Johnson tweeted On Monday afternoon, he will run unopposed in the upcoming May elections.

The last day to apply to vote was Friday. J.R. Jefferson applied to run for election Dallas mayor on Friday but was declared unqualified according to the city secretary’s office. The website is unclear as to why Jefferson was declared unqualified, and the city secretary’s office has yet to respond to a request for comment on his claim.

According to the mayor, he is the first candidate to run unopposed. Mayor of Dallas since 1967 and is the first to run unopposed since the city moved to a four-year term in 1991.

Johnson, 47, was elected the 60th mayor of Dallas in 2019 after defeating Scott Griggs in the second round. Before being elected mayor, Johnson represented the city of Dallas as a Democratic member in the Texas House of Representatives for nine years.

Although Johnson is a Democrat, Texas municipal and government elections are non-partisan.

According to the city secretary’s web page, the councilman is 12 seats. Kara Mendelsohn will also work without resistance. Every other member Dallas City Council has at least one applicant.

Election day for local/municipal elections is Saturday 6 May. The last day to register to vote is April 6th. Early voting begins on Monday, April 24th and will run until Tuesday, May 2nd.
